9/18/2014 -  Museum of Art/WSU Exhibition: Roger Shimomura: An American Knockoff
Pullman
The Washington State University Museum of Art announces the exhibition Roger Shimomura: An American Knockoff, September 19 – December 13, 2014. An opening reception will be held 6 pm Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Museum of Art/WSU gallery with a talk given by the artist at 7 pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission to the museum is free. We are thrilled to present a survey exhibition of the work of Lawrence, Kansas-based artist, Roger Shimomura, whose paintings and prints address sociopolitical issues of Asian America. He does this through a painting style that combines his childhood interest in comic books, American Pop Art and traditions of Japanese woodblock prints, thereby evoking his Japanese ancestry while locating him firmly within modern American artistic developments. Our exhibition focuses on Shimomura’s most recent series, An American Knockoff (2009-present), in which the artist inserts himself as an aging Asian Everyman in various guises, both funny and poignant. He does this as an imposter in or a battler against a host of ironic, stereotypical settings: punching at a gaggle of Disney cartoon characters, joining Chinese Mao-era brigades, attacking Japanese stereotypes and assuming identities of such iconic American figures as Superman, George Washington and Dick Tracy.

Murder at The Juice Joint

With the passing of prohibition and organized crime on the rise, The Juice Joint, a swanky speakeasy run by Rosie Marie, has been nothing but jumping. To celebrate its success, Rosie is planning a party to remember at the exclusive nightspot... and you are invited!

However, one of the names on the guest list is also on another's hit list... and no one is safe from the consequences.

With the murder on the menu, you are certain to find a medley of individuals to make the night most memorable. From the major mobsters and their molls to the swanky singer with her hopes at Hollywood, the cigarette girl with a temper that sizzles to the crooked police chief with nothing to lose -- no one is safe from murder... but everyone will have a chance at solving it. Will the culprit be the Mayor who is capable of murder? The blacklisted bootlegger desperate to increase their sales? Or possibly the director with a shot at making history?

With the recipe for murder, The Juice Joint will be certain to be serving up a night of mayhem to remember.

This is a 21 and over event. Each ticket purchase includes dinner catered by Chef Joan of Swilly's Pony Bar & Bistro, a keepsake of your evening and of course an evening of murder, bribery, blackmail and FUN!
